broccoli vanpayar thoran/broccoli red gram thoran

Ingredients

Broccoli       –  1 no

Red gram      –  1/2 cup

Coconut         – 1 cup

Green chilli chopped – 2- 3 no

Garlic                  – 3 cloves

Shallots               – 3 nos

Cumin seeds       – 1/4 tsp

Red chilli powder  – 1/4 tsp

Mustard seeds       – 1/2 tsp

Shallots                  – 1 tbsp

Curry leaves

Method
Soak red gram for 1/2 hour. Pressure cook it along with salt and water. (Don’t overcook red gram). Soak broccoli in salt water for 10 minutes. Remove and drain water (use a kitchen towel to remove excess water). Using a chopper, chop broccoli coarsely. Grind coarsely grated coconut, turmeric powder, red chilli powder, pearl onion,garlic and cumin seeds.

Heat oil in a pan, splutter mustard seeds. Saute pearl onions, green chillies and curry leaves. Now add coarsely chopped broccoli. Mix well. Add ground coconut paste now and mix well. (Don’t use any water). Close the pan using a lid. Cook for a minute. Now open the lid and add cooked red gram. Cook them till no water remains. Adjust salt accordingly.

  1. Love the way, you have scrambled the broccoli, beautiful.
    Although the combination of red gram with broccoli is new to me, it looks like a killer combo. Very colorful and I'm sure it was yummy.
    I never buy broccoli, because I some how never find ways to make it taste different – but your idea is very interesting and worth trying, I'm bookmarking this.

  3. Very interesting for me. I never knew that such a dish can be made until I am here. The flavors are good, the right ingredients and the right taste as a side for our rice.
