fish fry in spicy gravy / meen varutha curry

This is my ammachi’s recipe. This
curry needs no refrigeration for 2-3 days. You have to heat this every day and
it becomes tastier when it sits for 2-3 days.
Ingredients
To marinate
Fish – 1 kg
Pepper
powder – 1 tsp
Chili
powder – 2 tsp
Turmeric
powder – ½ tsp
Salt
To grind
Ginger, chopped
– 2 pieces (2-inches)
Garlic,
chopped – 15 cloves
Mustard
seeds – 1 tsp
Cumin
seeds – ½ tsp
For gravy
Onion,
sliced – 2 medium
Green
chili, slit – 1
Kashmiri
chili powder – 2½ tbsp
Turmeric
powder – ¼ tsp
Curry
leaves
Vinegar –
¼ cup as needed
Coconut
oil
Salt as
needed
Method
In a bowl, add pepper powder, chili powder, turmeric
powder, salt, and small quantity of water. Make a paste.
Marinate the fish pieces nicely using the paste for 1
hour.
Heat oil in a pan. Fry the marinated fish pieces. (Don’t
deep fry the fish).
Grind ginger, garlic, mustard seeds, and cumin seeds. Set this
ground paste aside.
Now in another bowl, add kashmiri chili powder, turmeric
powder and ground paste. Mix well. Set this aside.
Heat oil in an earthern pot or pan. Add curry leaves. Now
add sliced onions and green chili. Saute well till the onion turns light brown.
When onion turns light brown, add masala paste. Lower the flame and cook till the
raw smell of the masala leaves. Add water. Mix well. Now add vinegar and salt.
When the curry starts to a boil, add fried fish. When the fish curry starts to
boil, lower the flame and cook for 3 more minutes. Switch off the stove. Serve
hot with rice.
