Kara Chips/Savory Chips

Ingredients

All purpose flour  – 2 cups
Vegetable oil – 1 1/2 tbsp
Salt  – 1/2 tsp
Asafotedia powder – 1/2 tsp
Chilli powder – 1/2 tsp
Cumin seeds  – 1/2 tsp
Black sesame seeds – 1/2 tsp
Water – 3/4 -1 cup
Ghee – 1 1/2 tbsp
Rice flour (puttu podi) – 3 tbsp
Oil for frying

Method

Sift all purpose flour. Make well in between the flour and add oil, salt, asafoetida, chilli powder, cumin seeds and sesame seeds. Adding water little by little, knead the dough.

When the dough is ready, divide the dough into four pieces. Now roll the dough as shown in the picture. Smear ghee on the rolled dough and sprinkle rice flour. Now take second piece of the dough, roll them the same way as shown in the picture.

Place the rolled dough above the previously rolled dough and roll vertically (as we roll a mat). Lightly flatten the dough using the rolling pin with breadth of 2.5 inch. Using a knife, slanting, cut them in 1/4 inch pieces. . Deep fry them in oil.

Kara chips make a good teatime snack.

  2. Beena when I read your recipe it made my eyes all misty. My mum use to make these for us, using normal sesame seeds and other masalas. Just brought back fond memories of her.
