Malabar kootu curry

Kootu curry is a side dish usually served as part of the traditional kerala festivals like onam ,  vishu  or sadhya in kerala. 


Kootu curry means a combination of black chickpeas, vegetables , coconut and spices. 




Ingredients


Black chana – 1 cup
Raw banana   – 2 medium
Yam               – 11/2 cups
Green chillies    – 6 nos
Ginger chopped – 2 tsp
Salt
Coconut oil


For grinding
Grated coconut  – 2 cups
Cumin seeds      – 1 tsp
Turmeric powder – 1 tsp


For tempering
Mustard seeds  – 1 tsp
Coconut grated  – 2 tbsp
Dry red chillies – 4 nos
Curry leaves  – 2 sprigs


Method


Soak black chana and cook them. Set aside.


Grind grated coconut, cumin seeds and turmeric powder to a coarse paste.


Cut yam and raw banana into small pieces. Cook yam, raw banana, green chillies, ginger along with water. Now add cooked black chana. Add coarse paste to this. Now add water and salt. Cook for some more time.


heat oil in a pan, splutter mustard seeds, add grated  coconut pieces, red chillies, and curry leaves. Pour over the curry.
