Kerala Parippu Curry l Kerala Dal Curry

Kerala parippu curry is a traditional dish for Kerala Sadhya.

In Sadhya, dal curry is referred to as parippu. It is eaten along with rice and ghee.

Moong dal and coconut are the main ingredients for this simple dish.

There are many regional variations for the recipe. Some use toor dal, others use split moong as well.

INGREDIENTS
Moong dal – ½ cup
Ghee – 2 tsp
Water – 4 cups
Salt as needed

FOR GRINDING

Grated coconut – ¼ cup
Cumin seeds – ¼ tsp
Green chillies – 2

FOR TEMPERING

Ghee – 2 tsp
Shallots – 2
Curry leaves

INSTRUCTION

Grind coconut, cumin seeds, green chillies with little water to a smooth paste.

Heat ghee in a pressure cooker. Roast moong dal. Now add 3-4 cups of water and salt. Cook for 4-5 whistles. Once done, mash cooked dal. Add ground coconut paste. Cook on low flame for 5 minutes.

Heat ghee in a pan. Saute shallots, red chillies and curry leaves. When shallots turn brown in color, pour this over parippu curry.

Enjoy parippu with ghee.
