Mixed nutritious kanji/Mixed nutritious porridge


This kanji is very nutritious with the right amount of carbohydrates and protein and makes for a good morning breakfast.


Cracked wheat – 1/2 cup
Raw rice  – 1/4 cup
Moong dal – 1/4cup
Urad dal  – 1/4 cup
Toor dal   – 1/4 cup
Garlic, chopped – 10 no
Shallots, chopped – 5 nos
Ginger, chopped – 1 piece
Coriander powder – 1 tsp
Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
Pepper powder  – 1 tsp
Cumin seeds – 1 tsp
Fenugreek seeds – 1 1/2 tsp
Salt as needed
Coconut paste – 1/2 of a coconut


Wash cracked wheat, raw rice, moong dal, urad dal and toor dal in several changes of water. Place this in a pressure cooker. To this add, garlic, shallots, ginger, coriander powder, turmeric powder, pepper powder, cumin seeds, fenugreek seeds and salt. Cook till the first whistle comes, then lower the flame, and cook for another 5 minutes. When the pressure is released, open the lid of the pressure cooker and add ground coconut paste. Add water and salt as required. Keep this again in low flame for 5 minutes. Serve this kanji along with pickle or chammanthi.
