Padavalanga kootu/ Snake gourd kootu

Ingredients


Snake gourd cut into pieces  – 2 cups


Chana dal             – 1/4 cup


Cumin seeds          – a pinch


Turmeric powder  – 1/2 tsp


Green chillies         – 4 nos


Grated coconut         – 1/2 cup


Curry leaves              – few


Tamarind water           – to taste


Salt to taste


Coconut oil                    –  2 dsp


Mustard seeds                 – 1/2 tsp


Urad dal                           – 1 tsp


Chopped shallots              – 6 nos


Dry red chillies                  – 2 nos



Directions


Pressure cook chana dal and keep aside. 

Grind coarsely coconut, cumin seeds, green chilies and turmeric powder. Keep it aside.


Boil snake gourd along with 1/2 cup of water. Close the pan with a lid. When the snake gourd is steamed, add prepared dal to it. Add the ground coconut mixture and close the lid and steam it (Care should be taken not to overcook snakegourd and dal). Add curry leaves, tamarind water and salt. Switch off the stove. 


Now season it with oil, mustard seeds, urad dal, onion and dry red chillies. Serve hot with rice.

    Great with paruppu kulambu, rasam or even curd rice.
    And very healthy too. Love it.
